The Black Hill/Badlands region is about the great out of doors and there are plenty of ways you can your pup can enjoy it together. If you’re looking to hike, unfortunately you won’t be able to do it in the Badlands National Park, as pets are not permitted on the trails (they are allowed in the parking and picnic areas and campgrounds and must be on a 6-foot leash).

You and your pet can explore the Black Hills National Forest together, with its 353 miles of trails, 11 reservoirs, 1,300 miles of streams, and gorges. You must have your pet under your strict control, either on leash or under voice control. Do keep in mind that this area is home to bobcats, black bear, and mountain lions, as well as elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats.

While the Mount Rushmore National Park limits your pet’s access to the dog exercise areas at either end of the upper parking facility, the Crazy Horse Memorial welcomes you and your pet throughout the park. The only places your pet may not go are the food service areas and on the bus that goes to the bottom of the mountain.

And for those who prefer to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of their own vehicle, you and your pet can put the top down and take advantage several scenic drives, including the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park (where you might catch sight of the park’s 1,300-head herd of bison) and the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. This 19-mile section of Highway 14A between the towns of Spearfish and Lead offers up spectacular views of limestone palisades, as well as Roughlock Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.
